Do I really need a water softener here?+

What's the difference between a softener and a filter?+
A softener removes the hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) that scale your plumbing. A filter targets sediment, taste, odor, and certain contaminants. Many homes here benefit from both — we'll tell you what yours actually needs.
Is reverse osmosis worth it?+
For drinking and cooking water, RO produces very clean, great-tasting water and is popular here given the mineral content. It's typically an under-sink system at the kitchen tap, and pairs well with a whole-home softener.
